Hellfire Pass is a geographical location, a railway cutting in the jungle on the former Thai-Burma Railway in Thailand. It was named Hellfire Pass by Allied POWs who were forced to build it during their captivity as POWs. The reference to hell by the POWs forced to work on the railway was due to the particularly harsh conditions they were made to endure, and the heavy loss of life suffered by POWs during this stage of the railway's construction.
